Here’s our comprehensive guide to keeping your garden as you would like it.

Seasonal Gardening Maintenance in Sutton

Here’s our guide on what to focus on every season:

Spring (March – May)

• We clear away dead leaves, debris, old growth to start the season fresh. This helps us prevent disease and gives room for new growth.
• We prune shrubs, trees and perennials: We remove dead, damaged or crossing branches. Allowing much needed space to grow.
• We work on the soil: add compost and refresh mulch around borders.
• We plant: this is a good time to plant shrubs, perennials, spring bulbs. We carefully choose plants matched to the local environment and rainfall.
• Lawn care: as the weather improves and warms up, we mow your lawn when needed.
• We control weed growth: We remove weeds early, so they don’t grow.
• We create a garden maintenance plan. We discuss with you, what features would suit your garden such as a new border and raised beds.

Summer (June – August)

• We water your garden: we ensure plants get enough water, especially during hot spells.
• We mulch: we add mulch to your garden beds to suppress weed growth and retain moisture.
• Lawn: We mow your garden lawn on a regular basis. Not too short.
• Pests & disease: We inspect your garden on a regular basis. Summer heat + garden moisture = a good environment for pests and fungal issues.
• Dead-heading & garden maintenance: We remove dead flowers/plants, tidy up borders, prune lightly as and when needed.
• We keep garden borders trimmed and garden hedges under control.

Autumn (September – November)

• Leaf clearance: fallen leaves smother plants, accommodate pests, and rot into fungal problems. We rake, compost and remove.
• Planting bulbs: autumn is ideal for bulbs (daffodils, tulips etc). Always plant before winter.
• We prepare for winter: We add mulch to protect sensitive plants. We sometimes recommend frost covers.
• We tidy up: We clear dead flowers/plants and cut back herbaceous plants.

Winter (December – February)

• Important: Check for any garden damage, such as garden fences and structures and repair.
• Prune trees/shrubs while dormant (unless they flower early in Spring).
• Plan ahead for next year: Decide on new garden layouts.
• Protect your plants: frost mats, covers, move your potted plants to better suited and sheltered areas.
• Clear away any leftover garden debris, and check for any unwanted growth or issues that might be emerging.

Key garden maintenance tasks:

• We weed regularly: Weeds take nutrients, water and light. We do not let them take control.
• Soil health: Good soil = healthy flowers and plants.
• Mulching: As stated, mulch retains moisture, suppresses weed growth and helps regulate temperature.
• Watering: In dry periods, water deeply but less often to encourage strong roots.
• Lawn care: Mow at correct height, always remove moss.
• Choose plants well: Use flower/plant varieties that are suited to your soil.
• Garden waste disposal: We take all garden waste away with us.

Specific consideration:

• If plants/hedges overgrow onto pavements or neighbours property/land, you may need to trim back. For example, any growth from overgrown gardens that is overgrowing over the property boundary, can be cut off by the affected property owner to the boundary line.
